Why wouldn’t you…

According to Assoc Professor Bill Silvester of the Austin Hospital in Melbourne, over 85% of us will die after a lengthy and chronic illness (not suddenly) and half of us will not be able to make our own health care decisions when we are close to death. If you knew that, and you wanted to make life less complex for your family (and the doctors) not to mention giving yourself a bit of dying dignity, why wouldn’t you do an Advance Health Directive.  It’s a document in which you can, in advance, give directions about what health care you would or would not want if you couldn’t make your own health decisions in the future, including whether you do or don’t want life sustaining measures.

PS Something for the Government to think about as well - according to Professor Austin, if everyone in an Aged Care Facility had done some advance care planning, it would save our health budget some $350million per year!
