The Confluence of Affluence, Influence and Indifference…

I will be presenting at the Queensland Law Society’s Elder Law Conference in July. One of my topics is the increasing ‘kissing cousins’ nature of elder law and family law.

The dynamics of getting older is like a large vat into which many families pour dollops of wealth envy, jockeying for position, inheritance insurance, don’t care, and a little, just spend it!The brew is then seasoned to taste with some halapenos in the form of the blended family.

In this context, nowhere are the depths and heights of human nature better seen than when elderly couples (eg in a second marriage) are separated by illness and they and their respective children have to negotiate their financial and lifestyle futures.

You can hear my war stories on these developing and disturbing trends at the Conference  - I could be talking about your family!
