Charter of Residents' Rights for Community Care

The Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot, has announced details of the Government's new Charter of Rights and Responsibilities for Community Care which came into effect on 1 October.  The charter applies to all community care packages funded by the Federal Government.  The packages are designed to assist the elderly to continue to live independently and in their own homes and communities.

The main features of the charter are:

  • It outlines the rights of both the recipients of care and care workers;
  • The charter gives the recipients of care a greater say in how services are provided to them;
  • It will enable recipients to receive the type of care that is most appropriate for them and to receive safe and quality care at all times;
  • It will enable recipients to have their complaints investigated fairly and confidentially; and
  • The charter will protect the rights of care workers to a safe working environment.
