Award Modernisation

The Australian Industrial Relations Commission (“AIRC”) has completed ‘stage 2’ of the Award Modernisation process, and will now embark upon the drafting of ‘stage 3’ Modern Awards. ‘

Completed Stage 2 awards include health and welfare services (including aged care services), financial services, the private transport industry, and building, metal and civil construction.

Stage 3 awards will cover, amongst other areas, manufacturing in the food, beverage and tobacco industry, the tourism and travel industry, the liquor and accommodation industry, airline and airport operations (other than retail), and the maritime and meat industries. Drafts of these modern awards will be made available on 22 May 2009.

All modern awards, which will operate in conjunction with the Fair Work Act, will come into effect on 1 January 2010.  After this date, no individual AWAs or ITEAs can operate.
